• A Designer is Born

There is a time in our lives when we finally feel like we have ‘made it’ into something greater.  I have been having problems landing a decent job since I have graduated from my University way back in 2008.  I would like to consider that the year when everything went to hell, especially the job market.

Since then, I felt like Art jobs have been on the back-burner for companies.  Countless application and several interview started to feel like a burden on my life.  However I continued on and eventually I landed a job as a designer and marketing specialist at a local tshirt company here in St. Louis.

I am loving it so far, of course I have only been there two days.  My first day consisted of building my desk and just giving help to people that needed it.  Yes, that is right, a desk.  My first job with my own desk.  Then we ordered a Macintosh yesterday which should be sitting on my desk early next week.

Overall, I am excited to have finally ‘made it’ in the design world.  To some, it may not be much, but to me it is everything I have been looking forward to.  While I have been my own designer for over six years now, I am now officially a designer for someone other than myself.  It feels good.

The Universe has a way of working things out.

    Shooting for the stars,

  • Everchanging Technology

Who would have though that one day we would browse the internet with our phones, while downloading apps that can enhance the way we live on a day to day basis?  Not me!  I am not old, so I do not have stories of phones with turn dials, but I do recall ‘cell’ phones once being large enough to take up the entire space in between seats in a vehicle.  They were also very expensive to use and basically only for emergencies.

I have a, lack for better word, not-really-smart-but-not-dumb phone.  It can do internet browsing, but very limited.  There are no apps and I cannot do all the crazy QR and stargazing that most smartphones can do.  But it does me well.  That is, until now.  I feel like the market has changed so much and the past couple of years I felt as if the smartphone was more of a luxury than anything.  Yeah. Sure. Nice.  You can browse the internet and do all these wacky things, but in a world were coupons are now only accessible by smartphones, or email can be sent and received by phone along with the ability to use GPS when lost on the road is something I begin to find very helpful.  Trust me, there are plenty of times my wife and I would be out on the road and think of something to do but don’t know where it is or how to get there.  I am sure there is an app for that.

So I have been researching for the last couple of days and pinpointed a few phones I think would meet my needs.  The Samsung Galaxy S2 or the soon-to-release Motorola Droid Bionic.  The iPhone, while fancy by all means, just feels a bit more static to me rather than the customizable droids and the android market.  Plus, have you seen the screen for the Galaxy S2?

Of course my contract is not upgradable until October 2011, so there is still some time for opinions to change.

  • Cards Completed. Next Up...

In case you have not checked out my newly created Business cards do know that I have successfully come up with a design that satisfies me, while getting my information across to people.

It didn’t take as long as I thought it would have to be honest.  Which is great because I can turn my focus onto more projects while I have these puppies sent off for print.

I am still in the process of re-doing my website; new elements are in-bound to make it flow nicely. Beside new websites I really need to come up with a project that I can stretch my arms and crack my knuckles to just to flex my portfolio a bit more than ALIVE Magazine has done.

Other than that, business as usual.  Applying for new positions and not landing much.

    Design with peace,

    Brandon

  • Business Cards Are A Go!

For the last couple of months I have been wanting to develop a business card for myself; updated of course considering the last business card I created was back in 2007.  I never got around to actually creating one.

About a month ago I started jotting some images down with different variations of text just to see what I could come up with.  Then, last night, I finally took some of my brainstorm ideas and put them into fruition.  Within a couple of hours I finished the very front design and started the basic layout of the information side (back side).

The process changes a lot too.  When designing you alter elements here and there and eventually come up with something completely different than you imagined.  While the above image is a close representation of my front design, the final product is different in many ways; which will be yours to see when I completely finish my business card.

I expect to have the complete card finished tonight and send off for printing by this weekend.  Beside Vista Print, anyone recommend a great printing company?

    Card-tacular,

  • Organization is Key

My site is coming along nicely now.  Moving artwork together to make everything more organized can take some time.

Motivation comes from anywhere.  Today I turned on iTunes and blast some Moby just to get my art mind rolling.  Other days it could be something as simple as looking at some space pictures or even complete silence.  Coffee is always a benefit too.

    Have peace today.  It’s Friday!

  • Welcome to My New Blog!

Currently I am fixing up my website for people to check out my art work.  Basically I am going through and re-organizing everything so it makes just a little bit more sense.
